North of Girard Avenue in South Kensington, American Street has undergone a remarkable transformation. The location is ideal: it is near expanding neighborhoods, with more developments in the early stages, and public transit is within walking distance.
Two significant projects on the eastern side of American Street, located between Berks Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, are advancing swiftly. A distinctive feature of these developments is the detailed craftsmanship of the architectural elements. The sleek black and wood grain panels add an extra element to these buildings, which Helix carefully fabricated. Known for their precision and quality, Helix has contributed significantly to these structures’ aesthetic appeal and contemporary design.

At 1801 North American Street, a 5-story building is taking shape, featuring 110 residential units, two commercial spaces, and ample parking and bicycle facilities. Just south, 1735 North American Street boasts a 6-story structure with 179 residential units, 9,900 square feet of commercial space across three storefronts, and extensive parking and bicycle amenities.

These developments mark a significant change from the vacant lots and old industrial sites they replaced. The area’s evolution is further highlighted by the recent opening of a Grocery Outlet supermarket at the corner of American and Berks Street, showcasing how new developments are attracting essential neighborhood amenities.
The transformation of this block is profound, with completed buildings set to enhance the area as residents move in and ground-floor commercial spaces activate. Adding a new bike lane through American Street and the ongoing facade work on these projects underscore the neighborhood’s revitalization.
Just north of both of these projects, on the corner of American and Berks Street, a new Grocery Outlet supermarket just opened. So, the new development in the area has already started to attract neighborhood amenities.
Cricket Flats, a distinguished landmark in downtown Ardmore, PA, is not just a building. It’s a testament to innovative design and community-oriented living. Proudly contributing to this creative design, Helix is honored to have participated in this project. This 175,000-square-foot, five-story mixed-used building inspires the general public with its unique approach to urban living.
Cricket Flats features 77 luxury apartment units, 12,000 square feet of retail space, and a 105-square parking garage equipped with EV chargers, catering to the modern urban lifestyle. Residents enjoy various amenities, including a fitness center, rooftop terrace, green roof, meeting spaces, lounges, secure covered bicycle parking, a shared culinary kitchen, and raised bed gardens.
Helix, a key player in the project, provided the distinctive mental panels, including the sleek black and rich wood grain finishes that adorn the building’s facade. Collaborating with other talented designers, architects, and builders was an honor for Helix, and seeing Cricket Flats recognized with these awards is a testament to their expertise and contribution.

Our recent project, contributing to The Block in Philadelphia’s Callowhill zone, is a testament to the collaborative efforts of countless professionals, tedious planning, and relentless hard work. It is incredibly gratifying to witness the collective vision come to life and be recognized for its impact on the community. The Block’s innovative design and community impact were noticed and led by ISA (Interface Studio Architects), which received the prestigious 2023 AIA Housing Award. This accolade recognizes outstanding residential designs that improve housing quality, affordability, and sustainability. The award is a testament to the project’s excellence in architectural design and its positive contribution to the community.
The Block represents a pioneering approach to urban development. It is located on a former surface parking lot; this 49-unit mixed-used multi-family building bridges the gap between car-centric infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly design. The development transforms an abandoned industrial lot into a vibrant, amenity-rich space for a historically underserved neighborhood. The project was spearheaded by the owners of the adjacent single-story warehouse, now home to a local brewery and big-box retail. The Block strategically lines the retail parking lot’s 5th Street frontage with live/work units, while the ground-floor retail anchors the parking lot side. This innovative design enhances urban street life, encouraging pedestrian activity and supporting local businesses.
Our significant contribution to The Block was the fabrication of all the black pales that define the building’s sleek, modern aesthetic. These panels are more than just a design element; they represent the culmination of advanced fabrication techniques, precise engineering, and high-quality materials. Each panel is carefully crafted, ensuring durability, functionality, and visual appeal. The Block’s design is a unique blend of Philadelphia’s iconic rowhouse architecture and innovative circulation. Departing from traditional interior corridors, the building features an elevated, landscaped deck as the primary access point for upper-level walk-up units. This inventive solution maximizes space efficiency while providing residents with a refreshing outdoor environment.
The massing of The Block includes strategic apertures in both plan and section, creating unexpected views and enhancing pedestrian access. These design choices foster a sense of porosity and connectivity, seamlessly integrating the building into the layered streetscape. As we mark the completion of The Block, we eagerly anticipate future opportunities to be involved in projects that redefine innovation and design.
